Livingston
County, New York is in the Genesee
River Valley, which is part of the
magnificent Finger
Lakes Region of NY. The County is rich
in diversity. With outstanding natural splendor,
Livingston's residents enjoy the benefits of clean,
simple rural living. Its northern borders are
also within easy reach of the Rochester
Metropolitan Area.
The
2000 Census counted the population of Livingston
County at more than 64,000, living in thirty
towns and villages mostly in the northern sector.
The County covers more than 600 square miles. Its
western section contains some of the most visited
outdoor wonderlands in Upstate
New York. Over a million tourists per year
come to explore and delight in the awesome splendor of
Letchworth
State Park, known as the 'Grand Canyon of the
East'. The Genesee River cuts through a gorge
with cliffs reaching as high as 600 feet, and tumbles
down three glorious waterfalls.
Kayaking and white-water rafting await
thrill seekers, while almost seventy miles of trails
wind through the area, perfect for horse-back riding,
hiking and biking. Hot air balloon rides through
the gorge offer a bird's eye view. In winter,
the area is famous for its wonderful snowmobiling and
cross-country skiing.
Two
of the sparkling Finger Lakes are contained in
Livingston County, Hemlock
and Conesus
Lakes. Twenty-four different waterways,
including some of the best trout streams, grace the
region. New
York State's oldest fish hatchery still operates
in the village of Caledonia,
which also hosts annual Livingston County Fair.
Thousands of sportsmen come to the annual Hunting and
Fishing Days event held in East
Avon, celebrating this wonderful Outdoorsmen's
Paradise.
Livingston
County is not just about the outdoors. Today, it
is one of New York's fastest growing regions.
The County lies strategically located south of
Rochester and north of Corning,
with Interstate 390 providing swift access to major
markets. The county seat of Geneseo
is only forty-five minutes from Downtown Rochester and
fifty-five miles from the city of Buffalo.
The Greater
Rochester International Airport and the Dansville
Airport serve the area.
Though
mostly a rural County, with a strong agricultural
history, today's economy is also developing a
powerful industrial and manufacturing base. More
and more businesses are discovering Livingston
County's excellent quality of life and dependable and
conscientious workforce. The Livingston
County Development Group works closely with New
York State to provide a wealth of tax
incentives and resident training
programs. Geneseo is home to one of the
country's top-ranked colleges, the
State University of New York. The Genesee
Community College has two campuses, located in Lakeville
and Dansville, providing excellent higher education to
Livingston County residents. The most populated
towns in the area include: Mount
Morris, Livonia,
Dansville and Geneseo, with estimated 2004 populations
of over 5,000 residents each.
Livingston
County, New York offers the serenity of rural living
and some of the most spectacular scenery in the East.
At the same time, the southward spread of the
Rochester Metro Area offers County residents the
promise of future growth and prosperity.
